Biography
Alice Malsenior Walker was born February 9, 1944 in Ward Chapel, Georgia. She later changed her middle name to Tallulah-Kate in honor of her mother and grandmother. Walker dedicated her essay “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens.” to her mother because of her love of gardening.
Walker was shot by her brother with a BB gun which left her blind in her right eye. Walker writes about her experience with being shot and getting eye surgery in her essay “Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self.”
She graduated as valedictorian of her all black high school in 1961 and attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia where she participated in the Civil Rights Movement. She eventually graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1965.
Her first work of fiction was published when she was only 23 years old titled, "To Hell With Dying".

Throughout her writing career, Alice accepted writing positions at various universities including Jackson State University in Mississippi ad Tougaloo College. She eventually became a lecturer of "Black Woman Writers" at University of Massachusetts at Boston and Wellesley College.

How old was she and her brother when she got shot in the eye?
ReplyDeleteShe was about 8 years old. I'm not sure how old her brother was. But they were playing "Cowboys and Indians" and he accidently shot her with a BB gun.

ReplyDeleteWhy is "Purple" used as part of the title? What's the special significance to this color, or was it just randomly thrown in there? Also, did this book encounter a lot of censorship, much like "The Bluest Eye", due to its extreme themes, such as incest? What ever became of Celie's brother, anyway? Did he try to make up for what he did, or is he portrayed as being an uncaring male and going his own way? My ex-gf once told me she had seen the film version of this and how sad it was...

ReplyDeleteI added the color to the page and chose purple just because "The Color Purple" is Alice Walker's most famous work. There's no special significance. I also feel that purple matched her personality.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what you mean by Celie's brother. Her father was the one that abused her and her husband was also the other one that abused her. She didn't have a brother.
As for the censorship, I saw "The Color Purple" on many "Top 10 Most Challenged or Controversial Books" lists. I think it has been challenged because of the violence and sexual content. I know the love affair between Celie and Shug was pretty much left out in the movie, so lesbianism was a touchy subject as well. When you watch the movie, you cant even tell that they are having an affair. I also know that some critics were offended by the portrayal of black men in the novel. They didnt like how they were represented.
